Designate community and law enforcement CIT coordinators
CIT coordinator positions can vary significantly depending on the needs of the community and the individual partner agencies. Typically, communities designate a law enforcement CIT coordinator and/or a community CIT coordinator. Many law enforcement agencies assign a law enforcement CIT coordinator to implement and manage the law enforcement agency's role in CIT. He or she serves as a liaison between CIT officers, law enforcement leadership and community partners.
The coordinator is most likely to be successful if he or she holds a supervisory rank and has experience or a current assignment within uniform patrol. He or she is usually responsible for ensuring that the law enforcement agency is collaborating with other partners in the community. He and or she is the go-to person to ensure that CIT is nurtured and sustained in the long term. Community CIT coordinators can come from any of the core community partners. They typically serve as liaisons between the partner organizations.
Managing the specific day-to-day operations of law enforcement would not be part of this role, but a community CIT coordinator may work with a law enforcement CIT coordinator to ensure CIT is sustained as a community program.
